Moving into the dorms at Miami University can be an exciting and nerve-wracking experience, especially for incoming freshmen who are living away from home for the first time. And sometimes it's slightly awkward having to share a small space with a new roommate. Here's what you can expect during the move-in process:

A few weeks before you arrive, you will receive information about your designated move-in date and time, as well as instructions on where to park and check-in. Make sure to arrive on time and bring any necessary paperwork.

Now, the day arrived. You've followed the instructions on where to park and you checked in with your RA, or resident assistant. Once you've checked in, you'll be directed to a designated unloading area where you can unload your belongings from your car. On move-in day, be prepared for long lines and a lot of activity. Bring a dolly or hand truck to make moving your belongings easier. You'll also want to bring cleaning supplies to make sure your room is clean and tidy before you start unpacking. Volunteers and bins will also be available to help you carry your items to your room.

Each dorm room comes with basic furnishings such as a bed, desk, and closets, all of which you can find measurements for on Miami's housing portal. You'll need to bring your own bedding, towels, and any other personal items you'll need. You'll have some time to set up your room before attending any mandatory meetings or events. When packing for your dorm room, keep in mind that space is limited. Stick to the essentials and avoid overpacking. Coordinate with your roommate(s) to prevent duplication of items like microwaves, mini-fridges, and rugs.

During move-in weekend, Miami University hosts an orientation program for incoming freshmen. This program will be similar to the orientation you went through the summer, including information sessions on campus resources, academic expectations, and social events. You'll also have the opportunity to meet other students and get to know your new surroundings. There will also be the Welcome Home fair, where you'll be able to do fun things like tie-dye, tile painting, and street sign creations!

Dorm life provides a great opportunity to meet new people and form friendships. Many dorms have planned activities and events to help you get to know your floor and building mates. Additionally, Miami University has a variety of student organizations and clubs, so you can find groups that share your interests and hobbies. As well as the Living Learning Communities (LLCs) are a great way to connect with other students who share similar interests or academic goals. Miami University offers a variety of LLC options, including Honors, Business, Engineering, and Global Perspectives. These communities allow you to live and learn with others who are passionate about the same subjects as you. You'll have access to special programs, events, and resources that are tailored to your interests.

Living in a dorm means adjusting to a new environment and routine. Be prepared for some challenges, such as learning how to navigate campus, managing your time effectively, and adjusting to a new social scene. Remember to take advantage of the resources available to you, such as academic advisors, counseling services, and student organizations. When it comes to roommates, communication is key. You may be living with a stranger, but that doesn't mean you can't form a good relationship. Before move-in day, reach out to your roommate(s) via email or social media to introduce yourself and start getting to know each other. It is VERY important to discuss things like sleep schedules, study habits, and personal boundaries to ensure a smooth living arrangement. Keep an open mind and always try to be respectful of each other's differences.

Moving into the dorms at Miami University can be a fun and exciting experience, but it can also be a bit overwhelming. Just remember to stay organized, communicate with your roommate(s), and take advantage of all of the resources that Miami has to offer. Stay tuned to see what more I have to share, and welcome to the Redhawk family!

xoxo, with love and honor, Sierra
